An Alien Word You Want to Say

Venue 66

Flat 1/1, 57 Tassie Street, Glasgow, G41 3QG

Disabled access - No

Alison McBride - Giovanni Giacoia

The show will be inside a tenement flat on Glasgow Southside. The flat will become the space of communion and exchange where ‘strangeness’ is celebrated while eating, drawing, drinking and thinking together.

The event will create a common space where people are allowed to use any language other than English to communicate with each other. We are offering the experience of becoming-an-alien, i.e. a stranger, a foreigner, the ‘other’. Walking into the venue, the participants will be stripped of the English language and will be bound to operate in translation. By removing the language of power, the participants might be outside their normal comfort zone and left to play. We hope the experience enriches the participants’ understanding of themselves as the ‘other’.

The tools we are offering for this exchange are: bilingual dictionaries, sign language, gestures, charades and the universal language of drawing.  Furthermore: a pile of cards with different words in different languages will be piled up around the venue for people to translate, treasure or give away. There will be postcards for people to write a word and give it to other participants and biscuits and cakes in the shape of letters and dictionaries.

The participants will receive an instruction leaflet at the venue, which they can keep. When they leave, however, all written and drawn communications will be left behind in a box. The artists are planning to use these words and drawings in a follow up exhibition.
